**New Delhi:** Indian President Droupadi Murmu has granted official assent to the 'Kerala Bill, 2026', paving the way for the constitutional name of the state to be changed from 'Kerala' to 'Keralam'.

With the President's final approval, the name change will now take legal effect under the Constitution. The move concludes a legislative process that began when the Kerala Legislative Assembly passed a resolution in June 2024 and forwarded it to the central government.

According to the procedure laid down for such amendments, the proposal was first sent back to the state Assembly by the President to seek its response. The Assembly subsequently passed the resolution again unanimously, expressing its support for the bill.

The bill was then introduced in Parliament. It was passed by the Lok Sabha on August 11 this year, followed by its passage in the Rajya Sabha on August 12. Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai presented the details related to the bill in both Houses of Parliament. After clearing both Houses, the bill received the President's final signature.

Once the new law comes into force, the name of the state in the First Schedule of the Constitution will be updated from 'Kerala' to 'Keralam' under Article 3.

The change will reflect across all official usage. As per the provisions, central and state government documents, Gazette notifications, and government websites will use only 'Keralam' going forward.

Officials stated that the name change will also be implemented on signboards along national and state highways, on boards of government institutions, and on official seals in the coming days.
